The candidate’s experience
From a candidate’s point of view, a One-Way Video Interview is an on-demand interview they complete on their own time, before a deadline you set. There’s no live interviewer present. Instead, candidates record responses to your questions when it’s convenient for them.
Candidates control the pace. They can pause the interview, step away, and return later using the same interview link, as long as they submit before the deadline. Many candidates find this format less stressful than live interviews because they can take time to think and record in a familiar environment.
What happens after you send the interview invite
When you invite a candidate to take a One-Way interview, they receive an email with a unique interview link. Spark Hire provides a default email template for interview invitations, which you can customize to match your tone and branding, and where you can even include a personal message to provide context, next steps, or encouragement for the candidate.
1. Welcome and introduction
Candidates begin with a short welcome flow that includes:
- An intro video from your organization (if you’ve added one)
- A few brief tips explaining how the interview works
- A short tutorial outlining the interview process
They’re also asked to review and confirm interview expectations and consent guidelines. This step ensures candidates understand what’s allowed and how their responses will be used, and discourages the use of AI during the interview.
Finally, candidates are prompted to add or confirm their contact information, so your team has up-to-date details.
2. Device setup and practice recording
Next, candidates are guided through a technical setup:
- They test their webcam, microphone, and internet connection
- They must confirm everything is working before moving on
Once setup is complete, candidates have the option to record a practice video. This recording is not shared with your team. It’s only meant to help candidates:
- Get comfortable speaking on camera
- See how the recording interface works
- Check audio and video quality
Candidates can review and re-record the practice video as needed before starting the actual interview.
3. Recording interview responses
Once the walkthrough and practice are complete, candidates move on to the interview questions you created.
Candidates see and answer questions one at a time. For each question, they’re shown:
- Think time (if configured): how long they can review the question before recording begins
- Time limit: how long their response can be
- Number of takes: how many attempts they’re allowed
Depending on how you set up the interview:
- With limited think time, a countdown timer starts and recording begins automatically
- With unlimited think time, candidates start recording when they’re ready
After recording a response, candidates can review the video:
- If multiple takes are allowed, they can re-record until they run out of attempts
- If they’re satisfied, they submit and move to the next question
- If they choose not to submit, they can skip the question
Candidates can pause the interview at any point and return later using the same link.
Submitting the interview
Once all questions are completed, candidates submit the interview. The interview is then made available for the team to review in Meet.
