What is a video question?

A video question is a short video that plays before a candidate answers a one-way interview question. It’s tied to a text-based question and helps make the interview feel more personal and engaging.

You can:

  • Record a video directly in Spark Hire
  • Upload a video you’ve already recorded
  • Use Spark Hire’s professionally recorded video questions

Record a video question

  1. Go to Library > Question sets and open the question set you want to edit, or create a new one.
  2. Click the Custom Questions tab. This is where your company’s custom video questions are stored. You can view:
    • All – All questions created by your team
    • My Videos – Only questions created by you.
  3. Click Create to start a new question.
  4. In the Question text field, type the question you want candidates to answer.
  5. Set your Time limit, Allowed takes, and Think time using the dropdowns. Click Create to save the question.

  1. The screen will refresh—now click Add Video. Choose to Record a video.
  2. To record your video, click Record new video and follow the prompts.
  3. When you’re done, click Stop, review the video, and choose:
    • Submit if it’s good
    • Re-take if you want to try again
  4. After submitting, review all question settings and click Save.

  1. To add your new video question to the question set, click the ➕ icon next to the question.

Upload a video question

If you’ve already recorded a video outside of Spark Hire, you can upload it and use it in a question.

  1. Go to Library > Question sets, open the question set you want to edit, or create a new one, and jump to the Custom Questions tab.
  2. Click Create to start a new question.
  3. In the Question Text field, type the question you want candidates to answer.
  4. Set your time limit, allowed takes, and think time using the dropdowns. Click Create to save the question.
  5. The screen will refresh—now click Add Video. Choose to Select From Library.
  6. Select the video you’d like to add or upload it by clicking on Upload new video. Click Add video.
  7. After submitting, review all question settings and click Save.
  8. Back in your question set, click the ➕ icon next to your newly created video question to include it.

Embed a video question from the suggested question bank

  1. Go to Library > Question sets, open the question set you want to edit, or create a new one, and jump to the Suggestions tab.
  2. Use the Video toggle to view available video questions.
  3. Browse the list and click the ➕ plus icon next to the question you want to add.

Add a video question on the fly

If you’ve already started adding text questions while building your Question set, you can easily attach a video to any question.

  1. On the right side of the question, click the 🎥 camera icon to add a video
  2. Choose how to add the video:
    • Record a new video
    • Select an existing video from your library

You can mix video and text questions in the same interview—there’s no need to choose just one format.

💡 Tip: Always include the text version of your question as a fallback. If your plan changes or the video is removed, candidates will still see the text version during the interview.
