If something isn’t working, try these steps in order. Most issues are resolved here.

Quick fixes

  1. Close other apps that use your camera or mic: Zoom, Teams, FaceTime, and default camera apps can block access
  2. Restart your device. This frees the camera and mic from any stuck apps
  3. Update your browser
  4. Select the correct camera and mic in settings. In the recorder, open Settings (bottom area) and choose your devices
  5. Check your connection. Use a wired Ethernet connection if possible, or move closer to your router

Camera issues

Symptom: The camera is selected, but you do not see video.

Try this:

  1. Close other camera apps: Zoom, Teams, FaceTime, photos/camera apps
  2. Restart your computer or phone
  3. Update your browser to the latest version
    • Chrome (One-Way and Live on Windows, macOS, Android)
    • Firefox (One-Way on Windows, macOS)
    • Safari (One-Way and Live on iOS)
  4. Check permissions: allow the site to use your camera when prompted by the browser
  5. Check the lens: remove any cover or tape; some laptops have a physical shutter
  6. Update or reinstall your webcam driver (computers). See your device maker: Logitech, Dell, Lenovo, HP, ASUS, Samsung, Sony.
  7. Try another camera or switch to a mobile device. On Android, use Chrome; on iOS, use Safari

iPad tip: If Safari says it is not supported, go to Settings > Safari > Request Desktop Website and turn it off.

Microphone issues

Symptom: The mic is selected, but the meter does not move, or others cannot hear you.

Try this:

  1. Close other apps using the mic: Zoom, Teams, FaceTime, music, or recording apps
  2. Restart your device
  3. Update your browser (Chrome, Firefox, or Safari as above)
  4. Check permissions: allow the site to use your microphone when prompted
  5. Pick the right mic in Settings and speak into it. Watch for the level meter to move
  6. Check system input settings
  7. For external mics, replug firmly or try a different port
  8. Try another mic or use a headset with a built-in mic

Audio cutting in and out:

  • Switch to a different microphone in Settings and test again
  • Unplug and replug external mics to ensure a tight connection
  • Close bandwidth-heavy apps and browser tabs

Network and performance

  • Use a wired Ethernet connection when possible
  • Move closer to the Wi-Fi router and avoid busy networks
  • Close downloads, streaming apps, cloud backups, and heavy tabs
  • If video stutters, lower your video quality in More actions → Video quality

Saving or upload errors

Symptom: You see “An error occurred saving an answer.”

Do this:

  1. Refresh the page and try recording again
  2. Log out, log back in, and try again
  3. Switch browsers and try again (Chrome is recommended)
  4. Reboot your device and test once more

If the error continues, contact Spark Hire support.
